Latex is a natural living material that inevitably changes over time, and to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of latex rebreathing bags, they should be cleaned and stored under the following conditions:
Cleaning/disinfecting
Cleaning latex rebreathing bags is essential for maintaining hygiene, ensuring functionality, and prolonging the lifespan of the bag.
Use:
Mild soap, warm (not hot) water or medical-grade disinfectants (Chlorine hexedine solution or Virkon S), soft cloth, gloves, and a drying rack.
Steps:
- Pre-Clean: Rinse with warm water to remove residue.
- Wash: Gently clean with a soft cloth or sponge and mild soap. Avoid scrubbing or twisting.
- Rinse: Remove all soap residue with clean, warm water.
- Disinfect: Fill or submerge the bag in a diluted disinfectant solution for 10–15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly afterwards. Be aware that the use of chemicals may reduce the life span of the bag as it can deteriorate the latex.
Drying:
- Shake off excess water and air-dry neck-down or on a rack, away from sunlight or heat. Ensure the bag is completely dry before storage.
Sterilization (only after the bag is completely dry):
- Autoclave by max 121°C for 15 min at 15 psi
- ETO
- Cold chemical disinfectant e.g. Chlorine hexedine solution or Virkon S and soak for 15-30 min. Rinse well afterwards to remove disinfectant residues.
Maintenance:
- Inspect for cracks or damage. Apply talcum powder or latex conditioner to keep it supple. Replace damaged bags.
Storage:
- Cool, Dry Place: Store between 10°C–25°C with low humidity to prevent degradation.
- Avoid Sunlight and Heat: Keep away from direct sunlight, heaters, and radiators to protect the latex.
- Ozone-Free Zone: Store away from ozone-emitting equipment like electrical motors.
- Proper Packaging: Use original packaging or breathable bags to shield from dust and contaminants.
- No Folding: Store in natural shape to maintain elasticity and integrity.
