Most endotracheal tubes used in veterinary medicine are either straight or adapted from human medical designs. Human tubes are curved to match human airway anatomy and patient positioning, which differs significantly from animals under anesthesia. At the same time, completely straight tubes do not always provide optimal guidance or positioning during intubation.

Why veterinary-specific curvature matters

During anesthesia, animals—particularly dogs—are typically intubated with the head and neck fully extended. In this position, the airway is neither naturally curved like in humans nor perfectly straight. A tube designed specifically for this anatomy allows for safer, smoother, and more predictable intubation.
